When facing delays or flight cancellations, the effects of the disruption can be can be very stressful, especially if it means you have to alter your plans. But as travel disruption can occur at any time during your vacation it is essential to be prepared while travelling and learn to deal with the disturbance.
Keep Calm and Stay Away From the Airport
Though not the easiest option to follow, it’s important to remember safety comes first and airlines or tour operators will generally act in their customers’ best interests. The best thing to do to take help take your mind off things is read a book or magazine, or try do some work on a laptop if possible and wait for the situation to improve.
Long delays and flight cancellations – whatever the reasons may be – are among the most common causes of frustration and stress when traveling. So it is crucial to remember that during such times, airports and other points of departure are likely to turn into breeding grounds for anger and frustration from overwhelmed passengers. Being in the midst of the commotion is likely to cause distress and bring on more frustration. When feeling overwhelmed, it might be best to leave the airport altogether and go to a nearby hotel. However, if leaving the airport is not a preferable option, then the best place to wait might be in a secluded area like the airline lounge or a restaurant.

During a flight disruption, things tend to happen either too quickly or gradually; and information changes just as often. Whatever the case may be the best to do to make use of all the channels of communication available at the time. Contact the airline you are flying with directly to elicit information or visit their website for the latest updates on flights and the whole situation.
Being stranded a long way from home might also mean that you have to extend your stay while waiting for the situation to change. Seek advice from the airline involved before incurring any addition costs. While airlines have duty of care to their passengers to provide alternative travel arrangements, for example rebooking flights or rerouting passengers to other destinations, they may also be able to provide adequate accommodation, especially if they caused the disruption.
Additionally, whilst the prospect of traveling light might be more appealing than that of carrying a heavier carry-on bag, it is always good idea to keep some essential items such as a spare change of clothes and some toiletries inside your hand luggage. These will prove very useful when you find yourself stranded away from home and your luggage is already checked in.
